A Spotted Canary Project by Spotted Canary Creations

22 December 2011

Use colorful markers to make your handwriting come to life. Simple creative lettering techniques are easy, fun and useful every day whether journaling, writing class notes, grocery lists, thank you notes, love notes, signs, to do lists, creating cards, addressing envelopes, and labeling collections plus so much more!

Instructions

STEP 1:

The following are Creative Lettering Techniques that are fun to try:

STEP 2:

Printed letters are made up of straight lines and circles. Draw your straight lines quickly, and think round when creating circles.

STEP 3:

Vary the height of letters, alternating up and down in a zig zag pattern. This will make words appear creative rather than crooked.

STEP 4:

Use a large, thick bullet point marker end to create titles or to focus on important words.

STEP 5:

Add shadow lines with fine marker end. Always keep shadow lines on the same side of each letter. (See “Happy Birthday” in photo.)

STEP 6:

Apply “serifs” or designs to the ends of every letter to “finish off” those letters. Dots, hearts, stars, straight lines, triangles or small flowers are all fun to try.

STEP 7:

Write words in cursive and add extra detail lines and swirls. (See “Congratulations” in photo.)

STEP 8:

Add doodle lines to letters you have created. They can even coordinate with the theme of your word, such as sewing stitches. (See “My Button Collection” in photo.)

STEP 9:

Write on dark paper and envelopes with all the colorful opaque metallic markers. Your lettering will shine brightly! (See “Today’s Menu: ABC Soup” and “Remember” in photo.)

STEP 10:

Create letters that are tall and skinny when the space you have to write in is narrow. You can fit more letters in this way. (See “Grocery Store” in photo.)

STEP 11:

Remember to journal by and more colorful by adding names, dates and places in your own handwriting for future generations to enjoy.

STEP 12:

Handwritten notes are so personal and appreciated by the recipient. Have fun trying out some creative lettering techniques on your next note and envelope . . . Brighten someone’s day!
